On 18th March, 1915, 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers of 9 Brigade (which at the time had been temporarily attached to 28th Division from 3rd Division) moved into the front line south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 20th March. Arthur Whiting died from wounds on 19th March but as yet there is no information as to where and on what date he was wounded. He is buried in a nearby cemetery and it is likely that he was wounded during these two days in the trenches. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
